Well This Is Just Swell

Chapter 21: Discussions of Revenge

Sandy Mae was furious as she paced up and down her hallway. Words could not begin to describe how angry she was. Her friends were complete idiots!

She stopped when she heard a knock at the door. “Come in!” she yelled. When no one came forth, she swung the door open so hard that it hit the wall with a loud bang; on the other side stood Jenny, Danielle, and Gina.

“I am so furious at you three that I could spit!”

“Why, because we took care of the Davenport girl for you?” Gina stood with her arms crossed. Danielle and Jenny were much less sure of themselves.

“What were the three of you thinking!?” Sandy Mae screamed. “I was the one who was supposed to take care of her! It was my car that she blew up!”

The twins were in no hurry to enter the house. They knew what Sandy Mae had done to Bo, and she was far angrier at them. It had been Gina’s idea to go over there.

“Which she did because you injured that Duke boy. You shoulda known that hurtin’ him would end with her wrath bein’ directed toward you,” Gina retorted. “Besides, we had our own fish to fry with that problem of yours.”

“Oh and what was that? Hmm?”

“Well, before you flipped out for bein’ cheated on, when you yourself was cheatin’, we were havin’ ourselves a nice little competition to see who could win the heart of the blond Duke boy… but you had to gather a posse and shoot him, so now he’s takin’ the time to smell the roses.” Gina was standing her ground. The twins on the other hand had retreated back down to stand on the porch steps. They really didn’t like the fact that Gina was provoking Sandy Mae’s wrath.

“And what is that supposed to mean?”

“It means that he’s no longer playin’ the field, and is lookin’ much closer to his circle of friends to find that special woman.”

“Gina, why don’t you just tell her?” Danielle said nervously.

“Yeah, she doesn’t need to be any angrier than she already is.”

Gina uncrossed her arms. “What I mean is he was lookin’ at that Davenport brat like she hung the moon and stars on Sunday.”

“Oh really? Is that why you three put my little problem in the hospital? I hear she was in ICU.”

Gina looked at Sandy Mae like she’d grown a second head. “All we did was knock the wind out of her and cut her hair.”

“Yeah, well, the Sheriff is lookin’ for you three. He’s wantin’ to question y’all.” Sandy Mae informed them. “And that bumbling idiot might try to say that y’all were the reason for her ending up there.”

Jenny and Danielle looked at each other, rather nervously. All they had been really expecting was a slap on the wrists until Sandy Mae had mentioned the hospital.

“Gina… maybe we should turn ourselves in,” one of the twins suggested.

“Yeah, straighten this whole thing out.”

“And admit that part of the reason we followed her in was to get revenge for Sandy Mae for her car.”

“You two can if ya want, but I’m stayin’ right here.” Gina replied, not even looking at them. “But y’all might get off easier if ya conveniently forget to mention the revenge part. Just tell him the other thing we were thinkin’. We did it for her own good. That idiot girl attracted a man that she doesn’t know how to handle. If we had let him get a hold of her, she’d be on her way to ruin.”

Sandy Mae snorted. “First off, I don’t need you three gettin’ any type of revenge for me. I am quite capable of doin’ that myself. Second off, it sounds to me like the three of you got jealous when the dumb brat was able to do something the three of you couldn’t, and she did it without trying.”

“Well it was better than you gettin’ another count of attempted murder pinned on ya,” Gina said, recrossing her arms.

“True,” Sandy Mae mused. “But I still have plans on having my cake and eatin’ it too.”

“Is that why you didn’t report her to Sheriff Coltrane when she blew up your car,” Gina asked.

“Apparently the two of you missed the town bulletin board. Instead of trying to kill her, I did something that will shame her into leaving the county.” Sandy Mae didn’t like Hilery, and Hilery didn’t like Sandy Mae, but both of them respected each other too much to resort to violence.

“Oh, and what was that?” Danielle hadn’t been able to help herself. She just had to know.

“Remember when we were teenagers, and there was that party down at Hazzard Pond?”

“Yeah,” Jenny replied. She was genuinely curious herself.

“And remember she wore a bikini to go swimming?”

Gina was not amused. “Yeah.”

“My younger brother happened to have a camera with him that day, and got a picture of her when she stood up after swingin’ on the rope into the pond.”

All four of them started laughing. Now for anyone who is wondering what had happened, Hilery had swung off the rope and landed in the pond just fine… other than the fact that she had lost her bathing suit top. She had been 16 at the time, and had ended up hiding in her room for four days. Of course no one had seen anything they shouldn’t have, her hair having covered it, but it would still make for a very embarrassing photograph.

“You didn’t!” Gina said when she could speak again. She had tears streaming down her face.

“I did! I had a friend photocopy it and post it on the bulletin board in town!”

Little did Sandy Mae know, Rosco had seen it and removed it almost immediately after it had been posted… so her revenge didn’t have much of an impact. He had attributed it to Gina, Danielle, and Jenny, and was looking everywhere for them.

Speaking of the town sheriff, he had just pulled up in his patrol car. The girls were still laughing too hard to even notice.

He got out of his vehicle and grabbed his ticket book before walking up to them. When he cleared his throat, all four women jumped.

“Naughty, naughty, now. You girls are in a lot of trouble. Khee.” He was very happy to have found them. He pulled three tickets off the booklet and handed them to each of the three girls who were visiting.

“Oh come on Rosco! We were just evenin’ the playin’ field!” Jenny complained, looking at the ticket. She was wondering why he wasn’t arresting them for assault.

“You three are lucky I ain’t arrestin’ y’all. Boss dropped the charges, saying girls will be girls, and instead told me to give y’all a ticket for disturbing the peace. Khee. That’ll be five hundred dollars each. I love it, I love it.” Boss had also told Rosco that if he could find the girls to give them the tickets, he would get his usual fifty percent, of fifty percent, of fifty percent… with another fifty percent thrown in for added measure.

“And one more thing, whoever the wise guy was who posted that naughty photograph in town, I wouldn’t go doin’ that no more. Next time it’ll be another fine! Khee.”

The girls all looked at each other as Rosco departed. It had gone better than they had hoped for.
